Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
