Two Victims Identified in the Providence Campus Incident as Authorities Press On With Hunt for Killer.
Both young individuals who died in the weekend's tragic incident on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – while an intensive search for their assailant persisted following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also shared words of sorrow online, remarking: “There are no words. Thinking of her family and friends, especially her parents.”
An International Student
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, family members said.
Umurzokov’s identity was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.
The Shooting Incident
Nine more persons were wounded in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.
Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-old male arrested in a raid at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.
“There is a killer at large,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and go in another, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”
Community Anxiety
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our community”.
The shooter opened fire inside a lecture hall in the engineering building on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a police source reported to the Associated Press.
Officers that entered the hotel seized two firearms and two ammunition clips when the suspect was taken into custody, according to reports.
Condition of the Injured
Among those wounded, one student was released from the hospital, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.
A private school, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
Further Tributes
Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the group. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and other students,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, friends, and peers and lament the passing of his potential.”
Wider Picture
Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic higher education institution with about 7,300 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents reported in the US so far in the current year, according to data. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
