Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.
We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about how we choose to love one another.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
