The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
Citizens have gathered throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative stated the day's discussions finished without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.
Critical Matters in Discussions
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- After-conflict management of the region
Public Feeling
In the city's public square previously, young a woman - whose sibling lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No location appears as home now and until every captive return none of us will feel safe."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to end in as payment for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the music event, mourners assembled to remember the victims.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"As the evening arrives, the anxiety appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.
"My family are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, particularly my little child who places his face on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."
Medical Situation
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had taken in the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis reported additional victims had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, medical staff reported.
