New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, did not confirm this decision right away following his victory in November.

"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to dedicating my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain within me and the work I do," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

But his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment although he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his previous Astoria home.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
