Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
