The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside his partner, disclosed that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing disagreement among the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol for Support
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Current Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
The new product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally created in 2016 to support former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated that he will create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, following many years of involvement, citing concerns that the company's autonomy was undermined after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
