The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
