The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a abandoned church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
