Stupidity and Regal Arrogance Sunk Andrew, and It Might Persist Yet

This episode commenced with a single photograph, possibly the most impactful ever captured of a individual from the royal household.

There stood the Duke of York, standing closely beside a teenage girl, while an associate beamed conspiratorially in the background.

Absent that photograph, captured at a gathering in 2001, who would have believed the allegations of a adolescent who stated she was trafficked across the Atlantic and forced to have perfunctory relations with a individual of the royal family?

A strange, telling gesture by someone who had overtly asserted to have never heard of her, asserted he could no have had sex with her, and yet handed over millions of family money to avert a drawn-out court action.

Over a Decade of Controversy

In this context, conversations of the royal family acting firmly to cut Andrew off are wide of the mark. This controversy has persisted for the majority of 15 years since that photograph, and a further snapshot of Andrew walking congenially with a disgraced financier came to light.

  • Arrogance: To what extent did his siblings, possibly even his relatives, know that Andrew was so presumptuous?
  • Problematic Connections: They must have understood, if his employees and the authorities were performing their duties, that he had some extremely unsavory friends given he unabashedly welcomed them to estates.
  • Financial Extravagance: If the household did not know about his sexual proclivities, they certainly knew about his overspending with taxpayer funds.

Trips were documented in royal annual reports: private aircraft travel from the royal residence to a golf course and back again in time for midday meal, exclusive air travel instead of scheduled services, all for the convenience of "Airmiles Andy".

A Life of Privilege

Additionally the arrogance which demanded deference when he appeared in a space or the supreme consciousness about his honorifics used on his correspondence in letters to his personal acquaintances.

He could get away with it while his mother, who unaccountably indulged him, was still alive. The Queen did at least strip him of official roles and honorary colonelcies in the aftermath of his ill-fated and, it is now clear, deceptive media appearance six years ago.

Current Situation

Merely in the last fortnight that events sped up, following the issuance of biographical works giving more grim information of his conduct and that of his associates.

More information have again exposed Andrew's thinking that he could avoid deceiving about his interaction with a notorious figure.

People (and the journalists) were far in advance of the monarchy. There was nobody of any consequence to defend him, a result of all those years of presumption.

Royal Worries

The more intelligent royals recognized that. The one imperative is to hand down the monarchy, if not as before at least intact and untarnished.

Over time the last 190 years trying to reverse the image of previous monarchs, proving they are valuable, accountable and attentive to their citizens.

His actions endangered all that in peril in an age when submission and privacy is no longer adequate.

The Fallout

Eventually, the famously indecisive king was pressured further. There was no alternative. The royal household had lost control of the narrative.

Now it is the stripping of designations and the continued and lifetime public humiliation that will pain Andrew most severely.

  • Downgrading: Lowered to just a commoner
  • Prior Instance: The initial member to lose his designations in contemporary era
  • Military Service: Especially painful given his service in the conflict

He is still a constitutional officer, on paper able to stand in for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the throne, but not any of these will actually happen.

Coming Developments

Do individuals he comes across still acknowledge him? Could they still make mistakes and call him Prince? Would they say Andrew,

Certainly, he is not withdrawing to an ordinary town, but to the sovereign's vast property at a royal residence.

At that location, he will be provided by the king with one of the grace and favour houses and given some type of personal stipend.

It is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a nominal payment for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit distant, but even so it may not be far enough.

Outstanding Concerns

This is not over. There are still documents in the hands of overseas authorities to be disclosed.

  • Political Pressure: Might legislators seek further action
  • Monetary Probe: Or investigate the improper use of taxpayer funds
  • Judicial Potential: There may even be a law enforcement inquiry into his behavior

Maybe for the moment the harm to the monarchy to the crown is limited. The narrative from the palace was evidently that the removal of titles was what the king, and particularly other senior monarchical figures, sought.

A Shift in Position

An end to deception that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, notably, the short statement showed clearly that the royals were siding with the victim's account of incidents.

Even more, for the initial instance they eventually showed regard for the victims: "The measures are deemed necessary, despite the truth that he maintains his innocence of the accusations against him."

Finally it is arrogance, self-seeking and laziness that will undermine the institution. In his stupidity, self-indulgence and greed, Andrew gives the impression never to have learned that truth.
