Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
