Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials expressed outrage after the ex-president charged a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Recording That Triggered the Dispute

The video footage, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in military or defense roles.

"Similar to us, you all swore an pledge to protect and uphold this constitution," the representatives stated in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our constitution don't only come from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline unlawful commands, you must reject improper directives. No one has to execute directives that violate the statutes or our constitution."

Trump's Incensed Reaction

The recorded statement seemed to prompt a angry reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate publication, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives Answer

Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership issued a joint declaration denouncing the remarks.

"Political violence has no place in America," they stated. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our nation with exceptional patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."

The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the safety of these representatives and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these extreme online messages and withdraw his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.

Lawmakers' Strong Response

The representatives who appeared in the video also published a declaration.

"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who care for this country and took an vow to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "That oath continues forever, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental responsibility."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the national charter and duty to follow only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "All citizens must unite and denounce the president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."

More Governmental Reactions

The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and published on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of elected officials."

He added: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the offense of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and decide all that."

White House Statement

During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."

"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the representative said. "There are sitting members of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the president's proper directives."

She stated: "The sanctity of our armed forces depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can result in people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
