Condemnation Explodes as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Criticism

Individuals from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood industry are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Detention

Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant sum.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

“What a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."

Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

A number of GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.

Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his political party to defend the comments.

Reiner's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation after the shooting of a different political figure.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
