California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.
"Absolutely, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom commented when pressed about contemplating a White House bid after the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he emphasized that any decision is a long way off.
"The future will decide," he added.
Rising Profile as a Political Adversary
The California governor has come to the forefront as a high-profile adversary of the Trump administration, employing his social media accounts and pushing a ballot measure that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has made him a target from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a recent interview on Fox News. Duffy announced intentions to pull government money from California and suggested revoking the authority to grant CDLs.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," he declared, after a recently reported fatal crash in California involving an non-citizen trucker that caused three deaths and injured individuals.
Newsom's office noted that the U.S. government had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a trucking license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was withholding additional funds from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
Strong Response from the Administration
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand national statutes," his administration said in a last month's statement countering Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."
Public Opinion and Future Prospects
A recently conducted study found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.
Some time ago, Newsom remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, amazing," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
