An Account of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed to book lodging upon arrival, yet when I arrived, a major event was in town and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could spend the night at the airport – but soon learned that airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate 24 hours. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded a bus into town and found myself drifting towards the casino, believing I could pass the evening in an establishment that stayed open through the night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for acing a crucial interview the following day, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
Our society requires more people with such compassion.
It seems I seemed lost because a woman noticed me loitering in downtown and inquired if I was OK. I shared my situation and without hesitation she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground at her university residence at the local university – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: a leftover filled rolls she brought back her part-time job. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and secure to sleep.
In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she undertook being a woman letting a male stranger she’d just met crash at her place. At that time I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.
I didn’t end up go to ANU, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her generosity abundantly. The world needs more people like that woman.
