A Special Release Pokémon Card Aims to Be Super Effective Against Resellers

Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration is underway. The Pokémon Company alongside the Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop stocked with special items. Enthusiasts will find offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies that are drawing from the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, however, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. The store is scheduled both the physical location and its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.

The Book That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a much-awaited volume filled with stunning artwork depicting creatures in their natural habitats. It's essentially is the kind of research an in-world scientist could produce after adventurers submit their data, alternatively what Charles Darwin could have sketched if the famous islands were populated by Pidgeys instead of birds. Part of the charm lies in the book's serious treatment, treating Pokémon as worthy of subject for study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.

Why This Special Card Different

The company regularly to issue to release promos for major tournaments or brand collaborations. Many such collector items typically highlight the iconic mouse Pokémon that acts as the series face. The factor setting this new promotion apart is its distinctly bigger size. While precise specs were not immediately shared, its distribution is guaranteed to be highly restricted, and customers limited to only a single card per purchase.

Limiting Speculator Interest

According to an official announcement, a portion of the pop-up items will also be sold beyond the museum walls. However, broader availability is slated for specific stores within the United Kingdom. Critically, collectors will not be able to acquire this promo through the online Pokémon Center. While reseller interest is a given, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time stockpiling large numbers on this occasion. For those feeling left out, consider the upcoming fossil-themed display coming to Chicago later this year.

"Every penny of sales made in the museum store and its web shop, including these items, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of 400 scientists who are scientific inquiry to discover answers to the planetary emergency," the statement says.
